Galvanometer Points Per Second

irst, the "points per second" does not matter
to people watching and enjoying laser shows - the person sitting in
the bar, or at a theme park, or in a planetarium. These people have
never heard of points per second. The only thing they want to see
are pretty pictures. So the focus should be on the true end-results,
not the means to the end.
Second, of course one problem we are having in this industry
is that people can exaggerate about specifications. People can claim
that their scanners are 50K, when the reality is that they are only
15K. And there is one more element to this exaggeration. The people
claiming to have 50K scanners simply forget to put the word "ILDA"
after it. So this is 50K something, but not "50,000 points per
second when measured with the
ILDA test pattern".
So it is like comparing inches and centimeters, or inches and yards,
or inches and micrometers. Yes, probably their scanners do 50,000 of
something, but they are not 50,000 points per second, as measured
with using the ILDA
test pattern and using the prescribed techniques.
Third and most importantly, Pangolin is getting away from
points. QuickShow does not use points, and neither will BEYOND. In
fact, BEYOND will be even further away from points than even
QuickShow is right now. So -- no points, also means that there is no
longer a sense of "points per second". We do have a slider in our
software that allows people to adapt our software to their scanners,
but this slider does not control "points per second" in the most
classic definition of the term. The number reported by this slider
is to help experts understand -- in a relative sense -- where they
are at, compared to the scanners available on the market.
Non-experts can completely ignore the number on the slider.
With all of this being said, what we would like QuickShow users to
focus on is the same exact thing that their customers (their show
viewers) would like
them to focus on -- the quality of the image being projected. Who
cares if it is 15K, 50K or a billion K. People watching and enjoying
laser shows do
not care. What we all care about is what the final projected image
looks like.
That is what we are selling at Pangolin, and
that is something that QuickShow does better than any other
similarly-priced laser software.
What we would always recommend people do is watch chapter 2, which
shows people how to setup their projector with QuickShow, and how to
get the maximum performance out of their projector (the prettiest
pictures). Within that chapter, there is a discussion about how some
people exaggerate about their points per second, and how they can
tell whether the projector manufacturer is exaggerating or not. But
exaggerations or not, QuickShow can deliver the maximum performance
from any laser projector if they just follow the simple procedures
outlined in the tutorial video.
