Call
for entries
Pangolin Laser Systems is now accepting entries for the
2004 "Pangolin Prize," which honors the best laser works produced for
standard projectors using Pangolin software. This differs from other laser
awards because:
-
Judging is done by those active in laser display. Attendees at the
annual Pangolin Meeting will judge their peers' work.
-
Judging is done solely in laser. Video will not be used for judging
purposes.
-
Prizes worth a total of $3500 will be
awarded: $1000 each for two first place winners (graphics
and beams), $500 each for two second place winners, and $250
each for two third place winners. (Each prize consists of an equal part
of cash, plus a credit towards any future Pangolin software
purchase.)
There are two goals of the Pangolin Prize:
Anyone producing work using Pangolin software is eligible. Entrants
should read the rules carefully. Remember -- entries must arrive at Pangolin's office
by Friday, October 1.
Rules
and formats
Length: The laser work must be 5 minutes
or less. If the work is longer than 5 minutes, then the show may be stopped after that length of time.
Projector used: The laser work preferably should be able to be shown and
judged on a full-color ILDA Standard Projector: 30K graphics, PCAOM color. However, if you have works that require other scanning speeds, we may be able to accommodate this. Please
contact Pangolin to make special arrangements.
Type of show: Both graphics and beam/atmospheric shows may be entered.
Graphics shows will be front projected onto a screen. Beam/atmospheric shows will be
projected either over the audience's heads, or into the audience.
Audience-scanned beams must use safe audience-scanning techniques. The beam shows may be from a single scan head, or may be from a
pair of scan heads where the second head scans a mirror-image of the
first.
Original content: The laser work must contain at least 75%
original content: frames, animations, and show elements created by you or
your company.
Pangolin content: The laser work must contain
at least 75%
frames, animations and show elements created using Pangolin software.
Laser source format: The laser part of your work must be in Showtime Show format. The files can be on 3.5
inch floppy disks, Iomega ZIP 100 disks, or CDR disks.
Audio source format: The audio part of your work must be in one
of the following formats: Music on CD, or other media file (.WAV, .MP3, .AVI, etc.) so that they may be
auto-synced using Showtime.
Judging
Pre-screening: In the interest of time, a maximum of 15 entries
will be judged live at the Pangolin Meeting. If more than 15 entries are
received, then Pangolin Laser Systems shall select the
15 best entries,
at its sole discretion. These shall be presented for judging at the
Pangolin Meeting.
Judging qualifications: All registered attendees at the Pangolin
Meeting may judge.
Judging criteria: Entries will be judged on A) artistic quality,
and B) technological
skill and innovation. Each judge shall interpret
these criteria as he or she feels best.
Anonymous entries: Entries will be judged anonymously. Judges
will be told only the title of each entry and a brief description
submitted by the entrant.
Selection: Each judge may select one entry in each category
(first, second and third). Judges do not need to put an
entry in a category if they feel there is no qualified entry for that
category.
Scoring system and Judging procedure: Ballots will be tallied as follows:
3 points for
first place, 2 points for second, and 1 point for third. The entry with most points is awarded first place, the
entry with second-most points is awarded second place, and the entry with
the third-most points is awarded third place. Each category (i.e. graphics
and beam/atmospheric) is judged separately, so there are actually
two first place winners, two second place winners, etc.
Honorable mention: Since we will be
distributing six awards this year (three for graphics and three
for beams/atmospherics), there will not be an award given for honorable mention.
Ties: In case of a tie, the next lower place shall not be
awarded. The tying entries shall share the prize for the tying place
and the next lower place. For example, if there is a tie for first place,
then second place will not be awarded, and the tying entries will split
$1,500 worth of prizes (first plus second place prizes).
Disputes: In case of disputes over qualifications, judging
procedures, rule interpretation or any other matters connected with the
Pangolin Prize, the final arbiter shall be the prize provider, Pangolin
Laser Systems, at its sole and exclusive discretion. By entering, you
agree that Pangolin has the final say in all Pangolin
Prize matters, and that you will not sue Pangolin should you disagree with any of our decisions.
How to
enter
Deadline: Entries must be arrive at Pangolin's office by the
date and time specified above. Pangolin cannot be responsible for any
mailing or customs delays. Entries arriving after this time will not be
considered.
Entry fees: The first entry is free. Subsequent entries are $25
USD each. You may enter as many works as you wish.

If more than one person worked on the entry, list each person's name and
an optional description (such as "Digitizing" or
"Programming") in the order of their contributions. This list
also should include those providing contract work, clip art, or other
external sources of frames, animations or scripts.
Rights
and releases
Pangolin use: The laser entries
themselves may be used by
Pangolin Laser Systems in creating awards compilation videos, samples of
user works, demonstrations and other Pangolin-only uses at its discretion.

Public use: We suggest that if possible, entries be made
available to other Pangolin users, either for sale or as public domain.
