Permanent Beach Installation – English Channel. Weymouth, Dorset

CMT have recently completed a 7 laser permanent installation on seafront in Weymouth, Dorset, transforming the English Channel into a spectacular array of laser light. The installation comprises 7 laser system each with an Coherent OPSL 8 watt green laser, designed by Arctos Laser Systems in Germany.

Each laser sits at the top of a 15m high column and the columns and lasers all form part of an Art installation which is jointly funded by the Arts Council and Weymouth and Portland Borough Council and forms part of the Cultural Olympiad taking place. The public will be able to see up to seven lasers projecting light patterns directly into and over the sea in Weymouth Bay. The lights will be visible anywhere in or around the Georgian seafront.

Each laser system is controlled via it’s own independent Pangolin FB3 unit, mounted at the base of each column in a feeder pillar. The FB3 units are triggered via wireless dmx from a master control system. The columns are 800 metres apart from 1 – 7. Each column is a unique colour and the laser system were painted to match exactly. CMT have worked alongside the architects and artist for 2 years to realise the project, having undergone many design changes in that time. CMT’s experience in outdoor laser effects proved invaluable in the final designs. Gino Malocca of CMT worked with the artist’s to design the scanning effects which would match the artistic intent while maintaining a high brightness laser effect. Ram Malocca oversaw the technical project and liaised with the engineering contractors and of course Arctos engineering in Germany.

Tim Fothergill produced the safety case and employed the eminent Dr. John O’Hagan from the Health Protection Agency to advise CMT. The un-manned installation is permanent for a period of 10 years.
